BHP Approves Investment in Jansen Stage 1
August 17, 2021
BHP has approved a 5.7B USD capital expenditure for the Jansen Stage 1 (Jansen S1) potash project in east-central Saskatchewan.
Jansen S1 is being executed by HBJV (Hatch Bantrel Joint Venture) providing design, engineering and construction management services to BHP. The project includes an underground potash mine and the associated surface infrastructure which includes a processing facility, product storage, and an automated rail loading system.
“Jansen is expected to produce 4.35M tonnes of potash per year beginning in 2027. Potash is a key element in plant nutrition that also makes crops more drought resistant. Our team is proud to be part of this effort and to assist in opening up this new front for growth for BHP,” said Ben Hannah, HBJV Project Director, for Jansen.
“Bantrel is very proud of our ongoing participation and contribution to this historic BHP project. The Jansen S1 project execution model includes industry leading, award-winning approaches to digital initiatives and integrated project delivery. The design emphasis on lowered GHG emissions as well as lower water consumption aligns with Bantrel’s focus on sustainability and environmental footprint reduction,” said Brian Cole, VP of Mining, Infrastructure and Construction.
The Jansen project is expected to be completed in 2026.
